Police summons Blue Party officials
August 30, 2013
Ethiopian police have today summoned the leaders of the opposition Semayawi Party (Blue Party) for talks regarding their planned demonstration to be held this Sunday September 1, 2013. Ahead of their meeting, officials of the Party told ESAT that the planned demonstration will be held on Sunday and ‘will not be cancelled under any circumstances’. Chairman of the Party, Engineer Yilkal Getnet also affirmed that the demo will take place.
The letter sent from the police stated that they were called for talks regarding ‘security issues’ which many considered was a way to compel the Party to cancel the protest.
The Party said it has so far faced various harassments and hassles by the government while attempting to promote Sunday’s rally in the streets of the Capital.
It is to be recalled that the government has called its own demonstration on the same day as Blue Party (Sunday September 1, 2013) in Addis Ababa with the Ethiopian Inter-Religious Organizations Congress to “oppose extremism”
